Tucked between the shores of Red Brook Harbor and Phinneys Harbor lies the scenic seaside village of Pocasset. Pocasset’s name is actually from the Indian name “Poughkeeste”, and later “Pokesit” translated to mean “where the waters widen” in reference to Pocasset Harbor.

One of Pocasset's most recognizible land formations is the jutting penninsula of Wings Neck. A popular oceanfront residential community today, Wing's Neck extends from Pocasset out into Buzzards Bay, and was a busy thoroughfare in the nineteenth century. At that time the land was made up of several marshlands that contained plentiful iron ore deposits. Several foundries, including the Pocasset Iron Company, later to becom the Tahanto Manufacturing Company were established by the mid-1800s. These businesses added volume to the local shipping traffic, with many vessels traveling to and from Sandwich and Wareham. As maritime traffic in the vicinity increased, Congress appropriated $3,500 for a lighthouse in August 1848.

Ship building and lumber were also early industries, and was carried on by Handy’s Shipyard between 1829-1885 designing several brigs, schooners and smaller vessels. Like its neighboring villages of Cataumet and Monument Beach, Pocasset was incorporated when it became part of Bourne in 1884, and within twenty years would become a popular summer destination.

Today, Pocasset’s seaside charm still remains. Wing’s Neck, recently made popular by author, George Howe Colt for his book Big House: A Century in the Life of an American Summer Home , is now home to many oceanfront estates and the row of waterfront cottages in Patuissett still looks like it did almost 100 years ago. Many homes in the village have been converted to accommodate four-season lifestyles and the infrastructure surrounding Pocasset and its neighbors offers all the amenities one would need, from charming storefronts to fine eateries.
