As the large industrial centers in Massachusetts and New York prospered, affluent families wanted to escape the cities and enjoy the country. They scouted the areas of Buzzards Bay, Onset, and Monument Beach and decided it was ideal for their needs. It was a comfortable journey and the cool ocean breezes, sandy beaches and wooded lands made it an ideal summer retreat for the whole family.

Some 25 years after president Lincoln’s death, Actor Joseph Jefferson moved to the village of Cotuit Narrows, what is now referred to as Buzzards Bay. He built a magnificent estate on a hill overlooking the waters of Buttermilk Bay that he called "Crow's Nest." Around this time he befriended what would become the next Democrat to hold the White House, Grover Cleveland, who followed him to Bourne in response to Jefferson’s musings of “good fishing” and built Cape Cod’s first white house “Gray Gables”.

Buzzards Bay is home to the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and the Bourne Bridge which connects Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod bay terminating at Sagamore Beach  and Sandwich. New York financier August Belmont built the original Canal, which opened to maritime traffic in 1914. It turned out to be a financial disaster, due to its narrow 100-foot wide channel. In the late 1920s, the federal government assumed ownership and later widened the Canal to its present 500 feet. Buzzards Bay is also home to both the Army Corps of Engineers who maintains and controls the waters of the canal, and to the Massachusetts Maritime Acadamey.

Buzzards Bay village prides itself on its working waterfront and historic past, as well as its expanding tourist and retail trades.
