The town of Wareham is situated at the head of Buzzards Bay and offers an exceptional location within easy traveling distance to the Boston and Providence metropolitan areas. Incorporated in 1739, is a growing town, having several villages, its most notable being Onset village.
From its early beginnings of farming, fishing and ship building in the 1700s to the manufacturing era of the early 1800's, Wareham has always offered an excellent home for business and people.
Wareham’s historic Tremont Nail Company had descendents of the Mayflower discovering a soil which was essentially sandy and difficult to cultivate. As they plowed for their fist crops, they noticed that the earth yielded small deposits of crude iron ore mixed with the ooze of the marshland regions. From this ore and with crude smelters, they separated the metal from the ore and began the fashioning of nails and metal tools.
Cooking utensils, ship fitters hardware, nails and wagon treads grew from this ore dug in the swamps where the cranberries grow today. As the Massachusetts Bay Colony grew, the residents of Wareham were able to supply newcomers with nails for their homes.
Today the town enjoys one of the largest coastlines in Massachusetts with over 54 miles of sandy and warm waters on Buzzard’s Bay. Bordering Marion to the west and the village of Buzzards Bay to the east, its coastline is enhanced by numerous beaches, estuaries, rivers and ponds, making it a desirable destination and relocation site for many in search of easily accessible residential, vacation and retirement properties ranging from stately mansions to modest cottages.
