Perched upon a sandy bluff overlooking the calm waters entering from Buzzards Bay, lies the picturesque seaside village of Onset . Originally settled in 1666, the purchase of land was aptly referred to as Agawam or “The Sandy Landing Place”.

Over the Years the village had assumed many names, including “Old Pan” after the large evaporation pans used in the manufacturing of salt and “Pine Point” after a grove of majestic pines which grew on the very edge of the high bluffs.

During the mid to late 1800’s fashionable seaside resort hotels and summer cottages were built on the scenic shoreline surrounding Onset village and its neighbor to the east Buzzards Bay. Large crowds packed local establishments and danced to the likes of Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and Cab Calloway. The Prohibition years saw rum-runners stowing liquor upon Wicket’s Island while legends elude to buried pirate treasure on Onset Island.

Today, Onset Village is a burgeoning vacation destination once again. Families and couples looking to live in that perfect “home by the sea” have flocked to Onset. Soon to be retired baby-boomers and commuting couples are purchasing, renovating and rehabilitating Onset’s unique Victorian mansions and cottages.
