Monument Beach is a scenic summer community resting between the shores of the Mashnee Island spit and Tobys Island and bordered by the village of Pocasset . The “spit” was created when sand and stone was dredged for the re-routed Cape Cod Canal. Between 1935 and 1940 the canal was moved, from its original sharply curving channel through Phinney’s harbor, to a newer more direct approach through Buzzards Bay passing the shores of Mashnee Island and the entrance to Onset bay.
Colonial history states that in 1622, just two years after the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Governor William Bradford visited the small Indian Village of “Manomet”. Manomet referred to the local Tribe of Indians and the village has long since been referred to as Monument, and more recently Monument Beach .
During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s Monument Beach grew more rapidly than any other village in Bourne. It was long admired for its long rows of “pretty” residences as seen from the bay or passing train. With all the amenities and conveinience of home it created within many travelers a desire to enjoy its beauty, welcoming beach and expansive waterfront hotels.
Today, situated on its small and peaceful bay, Monument Beach is still an ideal place to spend a day in the sun next to the ocean. The beach has become a very popular destination for windsurfer and sea kayakers. Primarily a summer and residential community, Monument Beach offers vacationers, summer residents and “year-rounders” a variety of gracious village and waterfront homes.
