On any given summer day sailors and fishermen look to the land from their boats on Buzzard’s Bay and reflect on what life was like for the daring sea captains of Marion.
Set upon the shores of Sippican Harbor and bordered by the Towns of Mattapoisett to the south and Wareham to the north, Marion boasts the benefits of a seacoast residential community with white picket fences and small town character. In 1852, the town of "Sippican" would become known as Marion in honor of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion.
During the early to mid 1800’s Marion was considered home to many sea captains, sailors and some small ship building outfits. These captains and sailors spent many months at sea sailing everywhere often carrying cotton to Europe and cargoes to the Orient then turning back with a ship’s load of products from the East. Many of the captains prospered, became wealthy and constructed lavish homes and estates on Marion’s waterfront.
Today Marion is a town which captures the essence and heart of coastal New England. There is still a General Store in the center of the Village and the Post Office is directly across the street. Marion is also home to Tabor Academy, a well known college preparatory school whose picture perfect seaside campus stretches out across the village. And of course Marion is still a coveted home for many sailors…
