Nestled between the shores of Red Brook Harbor and Megansett Harbor rests the peaceful seaside village of Cataumet whose name derives from the Indian Chief “Kitteaumut” and from the “grassy knoll” near the beginnings of Scraggy Neck . Early native residents where that of the Succonessitt Indian Tribe, a peaceful and independent people who showed particular friendliness to early white explorers and settlers. The tribe was part of the greater Cape Wampanoags. Settlement was primarily on the coast and the greater area was settled by colonists in 1640.

Early settlers relied and lived on produce from the sea and soil. Soon after they realized the land was plentiful with Pine and Oak they began cultivating these forests for cordwood. Wharves were built and firewood was sold, shipped and utilized as an energy source up and throughout the coal burning era. Cataumet, as with its bordering neighbor Pocasset, another village of Bourne, was incorporated upon its separation from Sandwich in 1884. Cataumet village became a self-supportive village and soon became popular as a summering destination.

There are some interesting historical facts about Cataumet , for example, Penguins known as the Great Auk once thrived off the shores of Cataumet, also, the large peninsula of land known as Scraggy Neck was once purchased in its entirety by W.E.C. Eustis, “The Copper King” in 1890 for the grand sum of $40,000. Amazingly enough it had been sold just 20 years prior to Mr. Washington Allen for a mere $1,500.

Today, as with many post farming, fishing and ship building villages, Catauamet and it’s popular areas such as Scraggy Neck and Amrita Island have become host to many summer residences, vacationers and activities. On any given day both Red Brook and Megansett Harbor’s are teeming with sail boats, shell fishermen and beach combers.
